“International Summit on 40 Years of Hosting Afghan Refugees in Pakistan: A New Partnership for Solidarity” co-hosted by the Pakistan government and the United Nations refugee agency was attended by Secretary General Antonio Guterres and UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi in Islamabad. The summit included high level panel discussion on Afghan Refugees with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, US Ambassador for Afghan Peace and Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi and Dr. Sania Nishtar, Special Assistant to the PM on Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation. The panel explored ways of extending inclusive economic opportunities for bottom of pyramid in Afghanistan drawing on insights from Government of Pakistan’s multisectoral Ehsaas programme. The UN secretary general’s participation in the international conference is a recognition of Pakistan’s exemplary compassion, generosity and resolve in hosting Afghan refugees for the past four decades and our efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistan. UN chief Guterres is on a visit to Pakistan from Feb 16 to 19, 2020. This is his first trip to the country as head of the world body.
